Black Book (Fate Of A Gesture) 2021

Fate of a Gesture by Carter Ratcliff painted completely black using Krink ink. Krink ink is a type of ink associated with graffiti tagging. The work is also a reference to the term Black book which is a sketchbook used by graffiti writers that contains their drawings and those of others. The piece is a representation of a central aspect of my work in general which is erasure as both a conceptual and creative process. I'm excited that it will be on view at Galería Espacio Mínimo in Madrid Spain along with a few other works.

Kase Painting

Studio Notes: 5/26

Almost finished with this new Kase Painting in the studio. Color inspired by an old industrial site that I see each day while commuting to work. The painting is a perfect fit for the reclaim wood L-frame. Originally I had thought of making a black or dark grey painting for this frame to match the black manufactures mark on the plywood. Decided to go with the Lt blue first and figured if it didn't work it'd be easier to lay on the black/Grey then the other way around. The painting has three layers of color. The original ground color was brown with a warm white graffiti tag which I then removed with graffiti remover. The trace tag then got an additional layer of off white over coat before applying the final Lt Blue color. Just need some additional collaged on paint marks which often take a while but for the most part this painting is pretty much done.

Super excited to be included in such a great collection and exhibition with so many great artists. Black Mirror and Other Third World Refections opens this thursday Feb 14th at Florida Atlantic University. Reception is from 6:30 - 8pm with an artist talk at 7pm. Had the privilege to speak a little about my work during a curators breakfast hosted by Y.ES during Art Basel Miami Beach. The Y.ES Contemporary Art Loan Program includes work from The Mario Cader-Frech Art Collection.
